Mix Tape Memories

I found some old mix tapes in my stuff the other day. They were labeled "Summer 97" and "Summer 99" but had no other information. I wanted to know what was on the there so I listened to them on a cassette player (yes I still have one!) in the kids room. I was surprised at what I heard, how many memories came up with each song, and which songs are still on my list of all-time favorites. Some had been recorded from CD's (some of those CD's I still own!) and others were recorded from other people's mix tapes! So, in case you were curious what I was listening to over 10 years ago, the soundtrack to my college life, here it is:

Summer '97
Hook, Blues Traveler
Learning to Fly, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers--definitely still a favorite but I had forgotten about it!
Dream Weaver, REO Speedwagon
We Danced Anyway, Deana Carter
Independent Love Song, Scarlet
I Love You Always Forever, Donna Lewis--Very '90s! I heard this at every Institute dance in my college days... good times!
Storybook Love, Willy DeVille (The Princess Bride soundtrack)
Total Eclipse of the Heart, Nicki French--awesome dance mix of this song, thanks to Brian Porter and Miah Millar. :)
Ice Cream, Sarah McLachlan
Near You Always, Jewel--Oh, so good! I love Jewel!
Good Mother, Jann Arden
Little Wild One, The Wonders (That Thing You Do soundtrack)--One of the best movies ever, with really good music
Love Changes Everything, Aspects of Love Soundtrack--definitely inspired by Karlie; I've never seen that musical, but it was one of her favorites
The River, Garth Brooks
Under the Water, Merril Bainbridge--Ew! So random.
Cherry Cola, Savage Garden
All My Only Dreams, The Wonders
No One Needs to Know, Shania Twain
Head Over Feet, Alanis Morissette--ultimately, this song came to describe my relationship with Malcom but I didn't know it in 1997!
World Falls Down, David Bowie (Labyrinth Soundtrack)
More Than Words, Extreme--undoubtedly inspired by every stake dance I went to in my youth, and yet still a great song!
Standing Outside the Fire, Garth Brooks--gotta have Garth on EVERY mix tape, every mix CD, every playlist... EVER!
The Water is Wide, James Taylor
Hunduwatta, Twyce Around

Summer '99
Forever You and Me, Lighthouse Family--a song for Jeromy, the college sweetheart
I'm Alright, Jo Dee Messina
Standing Outside the Fire, Garth Brooks
Ashokan Farewell, Jay Ungar--so relaxing, still a strong favorite
The Puppy Song, Harry Nilsson (You've Got Mail Soundtrack)
Someone to Watch Over Me, George Gershwin, but sung by someone else!
59th Street Bridge Song, Simon & Garfunkel
Somewhere Over the Rainbow, You've Got Mail Soundtrack
Everybody Says Don't, Barbara Streisand--not usually a Streisand fan, but this one speaks to me.
Find the Cost of Freedom, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
The Stripper, Davie Rose
Distant Melody, Rigoletto Soundtrack
Something That We Do, Clint Black
She's Got A Way, Billy Joel--I've always wanted someone to dedicate this to me... someone tell Malcom! ;)
Magic, Ben Folds Five
Time to Say Goodbye, Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli--such a good breakup song!
Shoebox, Barenaked Ladies
Love's Recovery, Indigo Girls--Thanks to Rachel and Niki for the love of Indigo Girls!
The Promise, Tracy Chapman--This is the ultimate "waiting for a missionary" song. :)
Como Quisiera, Mana
Three Blind Mice, Babe: Pig in the City Soundtrack
Cecilia, Simon & Garfunkel
With or Without You, U2
Close Your Eyes, James Taylor
Grow Old With You, Adam Sandler (Wedding Singer Soundtrack)
A Horse Named Bill, David Grisman & Jerry Garcia--the craziest, weirdest, funniest song!
