The Hills Are Alive...

Yesterday, I had the most amazing opportunity to go to a Sound of Music Sing Along at The Hollywood Bowl. Nestled among the hills in Hollywood, nearly 18,000 people sat in an open amphitheater and sang together! The movie played on a GIANT screen with the words at the bottom whenever the characters sang.

First there was a costume contest. There were nuns of all shapes and sizes, a few "Von Trapp families," and lots of Marias. But the winning group was "Tea with jam and bread:" three little kids (had to be less than 6 years old!) dressed up as a cup of tea, a jar of jam, and a slice of bread. And what did they win?! A cruise! (I hope they're siblings because that prize would be hard to split between three families!)

Theresa and I watched the contest while eating dinner--one of the best things about "The Bowl" is they encourage you to bring in outside food and really make a night out of your visit. People bring four-course meals complete with wine! We had subway sandwiches and cookies, and it was awesome!

Then the movie started. Have you ever heard 18,000 people singing together? It was incredible! Every song was sung with enthusiasm, and there was a lot of other ad-libbing and audience participation. People were just having fun! One of my favorite parts was when we sang "Edelweiss;" everyone got out their cell phones and swayed back and forth, just like with lighters at a concert, only better. It looked like stars, very pretty!

We got to "boo" for the Nazi's, "hisssss" for the Baroness, and cheer when Maria came back to the Von Trapp family. Everyone got poppers and used them when the Captain and Maria kissed for the first time.

Lots more singing, then intermission, then more singing, and lots of cheering at the end. It was a great night. Thanks to Theresa for taking me with you--I owe you! If any of you out there have the opportunity, you have to attend. You won't regret it!

Wow Linds, I didn't know anything like that existed in the world...how fun was that? (That was a rhetorical question that you already answered anyway).

The bring your own food thing is so fun. We have a shakespeare festival here in Boise and people can bring their own dinners in. I took Chelsie and Polina to it and we all brought yummy things to share. I brought a tv tray to use as a table and put a little table cloth on it...brought long stemmed glasses and a china plate to put things on. It was way fun.
