Lost In Translation

Having an almost-two-year-old brings with it a certain amount of misunderstandings.

Lately, Bekah's favorite movie is Finding Nemo. She asks to watch it all day and I try not to give in too often. From it, she has learned that crabs say "hey, hey," birds say "nice" and turtles say "Dude!" She will even repeat those words if we ask her what the animals say--how silly. At the dinner table last week, Malcom was talking about something at work being a "crap shoot" and Bekah, thinking he said "crab" chimed in with "hey, hey." It seems she was just trying to be part of the conversation!

Bekah seems to understand time-outs, but not the whole cause/effect relationship. She had hit me in the face; I told her it was not nice and if she did it again, she'd have a time-out. She looked at me solemnly for a second, then walked herself to the corner. She stayed there for about three seconds, then turned around with a smile on her face. I guess she doesn't understand "if, then" yet!

It goes both ways: I misunderstand her all the time. "Nay-no" can either mean potato (as in Mr. Potato Head) or banana. And "no" can mean either no or milk. It all depends on the context.
